A Not So Common Prayer

August 4, 2015 by Leslie Green 7 Comments

common prayer

“A Green Prayer” by Muller Davis

A few years ago, while walking around the streets of Santa Fe, New Mexico, I glanced over and this piece of art caught my eye. I was drawn to it. The simplicity of it. The colors: green for Life and Nature, a hint of yellow for Happiness. The prayerful hands, the serene, closed eyes, and the head ever so slightly bowed in prayer.

I flipped it over and read the title: “A Green Prayer.” Next, I glanced down at the artist’s name: Muller Davis.  Green—my last name.  Davis—my son’s first name. A HAPPY, PEACEFUL feeling overcame me. Sold!

Right before going into the hospital for a bi-lateral mastectomy (following a breast cancer diagnosis), my “Sisters” on so many levels held a sacred evening of love for me and my family. There were many beautiful rituals performed that evening, which wove together to present a complete ceremony, marking the healing journey I had just begun. One of the rituals was a prayer circle. Going around the circle, one at a time, each person offered up a one to two word prayer for me (presented below). As each person said their prayer, I looked them in the eye, felt their love and sincerity, accepted their profound gift and blessing, and offered gratitude.

As the last person spoke, I realized that their prayers made up “A Green Prayer”…not your common prayer, but a visual prayer that appeared to me in a piece of art. With their heartfelt words, my Sister-Friends had embodied the same simple, beautiful, circular flow the artist had portrayed in the piece of art I’d been so drawn to. And once again, I felt Happy. Peaceful.

My prayer for you today is this: May you feel the sense of happiness and peace in your life that you so deserve. Claim it…even if yours doesn’t look like a common prayer…CLAIM IT.

Here are their prayers:

Susan:  Comfort

Christian:  Trust Life

Brady:  Trust

Davis:  Confidence

Anne:  Agape

Kathleen M.:  Happiness

Janna:  Wasah

Robin:  Admiration

Jo:  Bravery

Tracy:  Love

Alice:  Light and Healing

Amy:  No Chemo

Kathleen Z.:  Perfection
Jessica:  Divine Light

Nancy:  Letting Go

Kathy:  In The Moment

Alison:  NOW

 And so it is.  Amen.

Small to Large

November 30, 2011 by Leslie Green Leave a Comment

In Monday’s article, “Letting Go, A Practical Application,” I shared my thoughts on exactly that:  How we go about Letting Go and Trusting.

I provided examples of small Let Go’s and large Let Go’s, acknowledging the vast spectrum that exists.   I walked through a real example of something I wanted to Let Go of regarding the upcoming holiday season.  After finishing the example, I concluded with:

“The more we adapt our mode of thinking and the actions that follow to Let Go and Trust Life on the small stuff, the more we practice on a daily basis, the better prepared we are to handle the larger things.”

Let me start there. It’s kind of a long sentence I realize, so here’s our focus for today:

Understanding why practicing the smaller Let Go’s (like my holiday season example: house decorating, Christmas cards, shopping, etc.) on a daily basis leads to better handling of the larger Let Go’s (like forgiveness, feelings of wrongdoing, or abandonment).

Learning to Let Go of the daily, smaller things, will make available the mental space needed to dedicate to the larger ones.  Let me explain.

Often we have so many small Let Go’s hovering around us, we tend to leave them unaddressed.  Our tendency is to:

spend all of our energy and effort chasing these smaller items, never really resolving anything

…while constantly having our focus there (yet, nowhere in particular), it feels as if we’re swatting at gnats; we never allow ourselves to delve into what’s at the root – – the feeling in our hearts, or the forgiveness we’ve been meaning to get around to, until…

we snap or break.

At this point we’re exhausted, perhaps even frustrated, and often don’t realize why.  We think it’s one event in particular that caused us to snap or break.  However, in reality, we haven’t paused long enough to consider all of the minutia we didn’t deal with that sapped our energy to begin with.

By not Letting Go of the smaller items as they arose, we’ve essentially created a scattered space to operate from.  We’re untrained regarding how to tackle the larger items.  Then, when one of these larger items does present itself, we wonder, “Now, why can’t I just Let this Go?  Why can’t I forgive her?  Why am I having such difficulty getting over this?”

Learning how to Let Go of the smaller items as they occur helps us on so many levels:

  • we are better able to be present in our daily lives
  • we have the mental space available for the larger Let Go’s
  • we are more prepared to Let Go of the larger items because we’ve practiced, hopefully on a daily basis

Clear all of that space and regain all of that energy and what happens?  You begin to focus on Life.  And living it to the fullest.  You begin to sleep better at night.  You begin to feel peace.  Joy.  Happiness.

Does it sound worth the effort?

The key is to start small.  Learn to Let Go daily.  Grow that muscle until you’re ready for the larger Let Go’s.

Still unsure or apprehensive about how to get started?  If so, I’m offering to help.  I’m happy to partner with the first 5 or so people who contact me.  That’s how much I believe this can change your life.

Let Go and Believe a Greater Outcome is Already Yours.

About

Leslie I understand that for many, Trust does not come easy. It falls into the black-hole called "Easier-Said-Than-Done." And here is why: Because as children, most of us learned the exact opposite of how trust works.                Continue reading >>
